Beautiful Montreal Libraries to Visit (2024)

As a graduate student from McGill’s School of Information Studies, I am always looking for libraries to visit in Montreal in my spare time. Beyond their role as repositories of knowledge, libraries often serve as architectural marvels, cultural landmarks, and vibrant community hubs. For many, visiting libraries while traveling offers a window into the soul of a city or region, providing insights into its intellectual heritage, literary traditions, and societal values.

From grand institutions with centuries-old collections to cozy neighborhood libraries brimming with local charm, each offers a distinct experience that resonates with curious minds and wandering souls. Whether exploring rare manuscripts, attending literary events, or simply basking in the quiet sanctuary of stacks, libraries captivate me with their blend of history, artistry, and the promise of discovery. Moreover, they often serve as peaceful respites from the hustle and bustle of tourist crowds, offering moments of reflection and connection amidst the excitement of exploration. These are my go-to spots where I choose to read, leisure and create.

First on our list is BAnQ (Bibliothèque et Archive National du Québec). As the largest national public library throughout the province, BAnQ spread across 33,000-square-metres on six levels. The design takes full advantage of natural light, which floods the space through the building's extensive glass facade, enhancing the open and airy feel of the interior. The décor is modern and minimalist, emphasizing clean lines and neutral colors that complement the natural wood and metal finishes. This simplicity serves to keep the focus on the books and materials, yet artistic touches throughout the space add character and reflect the cultural significance of the library. Each floor features a unique arrangement suited to its specific function, with comfortable seating, adjustable lighting, and noise management systems to accommodate both quiet study and more dynamic group activities. There are no less than 3.5 million items—be it books, music or movies—and 2,520 chairs to curl up in with them. In fact, everything from books to video games, vinyls, and museum passes are available to be borrowed.

Next is BAnQ Vieux-Montréal. Housed in the magnificent early-1900s beaux-arts-style building of the former École des hautes études commerciales (HEC), BAnQ Vieux-Montréal preserves documents dating back to the 17th century. BAnQ Vieux-Montréal is open to the public for research and presents themed exhibits year round.

Founded in 1828, the Atwater Library is a historic gem nestled in the vibrant city of Montreal, Quebec. Despite the stately exterior of this 100-year-old heritage building, this independent community library welcomes guests with a homey atmosphere inside. More than 40,000 books (mostly in English) fill the wooden shelves between potted plants that flourish thanks to an abundance of grand arched windows. Even the greenery—or at least seedlings of beans, peas, tomatoes, and other verdure—can be ‘borrowed’ from the Seed Library collection. Coffee and biscuits are served during the weekly Lunchtime Series where local authors and guests give presentations and workshops on various topics. Guests can also brush up on their digital literacy here by signing up for computer courses. With a legacy spanning over centuries, it stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of learning and community. Steeped in architectural beauty, the library's layout seamlessly blends the elegance of its past with the functionality of the present, offering visitors a serene oasis for intellectual exploration. Its collections, meticulously curated over the years, boast a diverse array of books, periodicals, and digital resources, catering to the interests and passions of patrons young and old. From literary classics to cutting-edge research materials, the Atwater Library remains a beacon of knowledge, inviting all who enter to embark on a journey of discovery and enlightenment. With its rich history, timeless charm, and unwavering commitment to education, the Atwater Library continues to inspire and enrich the lives of Montrealer and visitors alike.

Bibliothèque Maisonneuve (Maisonneuve public library) is yet another treasured library. Located in the historic borough of Hochelaga-Maisonneuve in Montreal, it boasts a rich heritage that mirrors the dynamic history of its surroundings. Established in 1912, the library was initially part of an ambitious urban development plan designed by architect Marius Dufresne to promote culture and education in the growing working-class neighborhood. The building itself is a stunning example of early 20th-century architecture, combining elements of neoclassical design with the distinctive ornamental flourishes that characterize many of the period's public buildings in Montreal. Throughout its history, the Maisonneuve Public Library has been a cornerstone of the community, adapting to meet the evolving needs of its patrons. From its early days of providing educational opportunities to local workers and their families, to its current role as a modern information hub, the library continues to uphold its mission of fostering knowledge, creativity, and community engagement.
