This is just a quick Thank You! to the posts that pointed me toward Safelite. After some frustrating experiences with other autoglass companies that led me to believe that there was nothing available for my Fiero, my experience with Safelite was thoroughly professional and now I am happily looking through a shiny new windshield. Those of you who have experienced it know that a new windshield really alters the driving experience in an older car.

One heads-up for those contemplating using Safelite: they informed me before they started work that if they found substantial rust (25 square inches as I recall - but don't depend on that) or pinholes through the metal when they removed the old windshield they would not install a new windshield, nor would they reinstall the old one. That scared me a bit, but there was no problem with my car. I only mention it so you'll know ahead of time and not be surprised by that issue.

Yeah, that rust statement is a blanket statement to protect them.

I didn't know Safelite had any more windshields. My son needed one last year and we ended up with a Chinese one. Not what I wanted but it was all we could find. Do you know where your Safelite windshield was made?

Safelite makes their own glass and I am sure it is imported like most others.

As for Rust most GM cars have rust in the windshield area and I am shock when there is none.

Quite a blanket statement. If they removed my windshield and found rust and refused to install the new one, I would ask if I could pay for the glass if they leave it behind. Then have it installed on my own. After all, they already did all the hard work and what are the odds of them taking it back and having another Fiero owner call for one.

Spoon

ps: Yes I would repair the rust.

They have to protect themselves as often some cars are rusted to the point they just do not want to be responsible for any later issue. Also with many of todays new cars the widshield is a intergeral part of the structure. It also has to retain the air bag on the passenger side. A lot of liability with the newer cars anymore could result if a widshield popped out.

I don't want to say anything negative about safelite as they are one of our regular customers. Actually their parent company Belron also owns Standard Glass in Canada and is part of the largest glass chain in the world so there's a lot of business there. They may make their own windshields in the NC plant but it all depends on the dot# on the windshield. That will tell us country of origin.
I wasn't going to get into this now but if anyone wants a new Chinese windshield we can sell them through one of our distributors in the US for abou $100 even picked up at approx 50 warehouses. The distributor does not deal direct with the public but we can sell them direct to you and arrange details for you to pick up. Besides New england, warehouses are in about 20 states including PA, VA, IL, TN, NC, GA, FL, OH, CO, NV, UT, OR, WA, CA, AZ and a few others.
These would save you freight charges.
If you prefer a non chinese brand I can check elsewhere but that will involve freight charges which will more than double the price. It is FYG BRand windshields, same making the door glasses.. Feel free to call us during the week 877-345-2800 to arrange for ones picked up or email info@prosourceglassintl.com I think these are still a good deal for $100 brand new.
If you ahve rust enough glass shops can suggest about repairing the rust before priming and installing a new windshield. All the posts are very much on the ball.. it's all about liability. Of course a few minor spots of rust can be cleaned up as long as it is not serious and a quality primer and urethane is used. It's definitely the call of the glass installing shop to do it right. Just my 2 cents.
