This is just a quick Thank You! to the posts that pointed me toward Safelite. After some frustrating experiences with other autoglass companies that led me to believe that there was nothing available for my Fiero, my experience with Safelite was thoroughly professional and now I am happily looking through a shiny new windshield. Those of you who have experienced it know that a new windshield really alters the driving experience in an older car. One heads-up for those contemplating using Safelite: they informed me before they started work that if they found substantial rust (25 square inches as I recall - but don't depend on that) or pinholes through the metal when they removed the old windshield they would not install a new windshield, nor would they reinstall the old one. That scared me a bit, but there was no problem with my car. I only mention it so you'll know ahead of time and not be surprised by that issue. IP: Logged

Yeah, that rust statement is a blanket statement to protect them. IP: Logged

I didn't know Safelite had any more windshields. My son needed one last year and we ended up with a Chinese one. Not what I wanted but it was all we could find. Do you know where your Safelite windshield was made? IP: Logged

Safelite makes their own glass and I am sure it is imported like most others. As for Rust most GM cars have rust in the windshield area and I am shock when there is none. IP: Logged

Quite a blanket statement. If they removed my windshield and found rust and refused to install the new one, I would ask if I could pay for the glass if they leave it behind. Then have it installed on my own. After all, they already did all the hard work and what are the odds of them taking it back and having another Fiero owner call for one. Spoon ps: Yes I would repair the rust. ------------------ IP: Logged

They have to protect themselves as often some cars are rusted to the point they just do not want to be responsible for any later issue. Also with many of todays new cars the widshield is a intergeral part of the structure. It also has to retain the air bag on the passenger side. A lot of liability with the newer cars anymore could result if a widshield popped out. IP: Logged

I don't want to say anything negative about safelite as they are one of our regular customers. Actually their parent company Belron also owns Standard Glass in Canada and is part of the largest glass chain in the world so there's a lot of business there. They may make their own windshields in the NC plant but it all depends on the dot# on the windshield. That will tell us country of origin. IP: Logged |
